Digital Media: Digital Journalism Concentration

西瓜视频鈥檚 digital journalism program produces storytellers who are passionate about building upon traditional journalistic skills through the constantly-changing lens of digital media.

Coursework will explore the history and contemporary landscape of multimedia journalism. Students will explore specialized topics such as broadcast journalism, sports and beat reporting, and journalistic ethics. Through experiential learning opportunities, students have the opportunity to explore different areas of digital journalism firsthand in order to determine their career focus.

The impact that journalism has on society, from both historical and current perspectives, is central to this concentration. Digital journalism students may choose to seek careers in print media, broadcasting, online publishing, podcasting and public relations.

  • Year 1

    Learn the fundamentals of journalism and storytelling using traditional and digital techniques.
    During their freshman year, students take a mix of general education requirements and foundational courses in journalism, as well as complete their first internship. Students explore the impact of mediated and mass communication in society and gain expertise in multiple modes of storytelling.

  • Year 2

    During the second year, students continue to develop theoretical and practical skills in the classroom and in the field.

    Year two features a deeper dive into the journalism profession thanks to courses in social media, multimedia, and contemporary issues. Students will also complete their second 120-hour internship.

  • Year 3

    With two internships now completed, students are well-prepared to take more specialized courses such as beat, health, sports, and data journalism.
    Year three courses examine the role of media in modern culture. Course content will focus on documentary film as well as developing skills in feature writing and podcasting. Specialized courses prepare students for their senior year thesis project and final, semester-long internship.

  • Year 4

    Students enter their final year prepared to complete their senior thesis project, which may be a series of podcasts, a documentary, or a long form piece of journalism.

    Students will wrap up their undergraduate studies with a full-semester field experience and a senior thesis project, two unique features in 西瓜视频鈥檚 academic model.

    Note: Digital journalism students must take three of the digital journalism electives below.
