Sophia Gosselin-Smoske ’24 Named 2023 AASHE Sustainability Award Finalist
Sophia Gosselin-Smoske ’24 has been named a finalist for the 2023 Student Sustainability Leadership Award given by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE).
The AASHE Sustainability Awards provide global recognition to the individuals and organizations leading the higher education sustainability movement. The outstanding individuals and institutions recognized as finalists were selected based on overall impact, innovation, stakeholder involvement, clarity, and other criteria specific to each award category.
“My work at the sustainability office means a lot to me, and I dedicate lots of my time and energy to it, so it's really nice to be recognized for it,” said Gosselin-Smoske, an environmental science major. “I am excited for Î÷¹ÏÊÓƵ's sustainability efforts to be recognized as well through this award. I am incredibly grateful to the Office of Sustainability staff who has been nothing but supportive of me and all the work I and the other fellows do.”
A Research and DEIB Fellow for the Office of Sustainability, Gosselin-Smoske brought together social and environmental issues for her project with the creation of Î÷¹ÏÊÓƵ’s Environmental Justice Working Group in the spring of 2023.
Gosselin-Smoske recruited people for the group, as well as hosted meetings surrounding the topic. The group discusses how Î÷¹ÏÊÓƵ can increase its stakes in environmental justice and prioritize equity as the College makes sustainable transitions.
“The higher education sustainability community continues to show themselves as leaders in the global sustainability movement. This is never more evident than through the many entries received for the AASHE Sustainability Awards,” said Executive Director Meghan Fay Zahniser. “I am proud to recognize the innovation and leadership demonstrated by this year’s finalists.”
